The team at Latitude has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jonathan Cardona following an illness.
Jonathan was one of the most influential figures in Malta’s investment migration sector and a respected leader whose contribution to public administration extended across multiple government institutions over the course of his career.
He held a number of senior positions throughout his professional life, including leadership roles within Identity Malta, Residency Malta Agency, the National Development and Social Fund, and Enemalta. Through these positions, Jonathan helped shape some of Malta’s most important residence and citizenship frameworks, contributing significantly to the country’s economic development and international positioning.
His impact, however, extended well beyond policy, programs, and institutions.
In a tribute published by IMI, Latitude Group CEO Eric Major reflected on Jonathan’s unique qualities as a public servant and leader.
“In an era where public administration is often characterised by process, bureaucracy, and caution, Jonathan was a rare breed of civil servant. He possessed an exceptional combination of pragmatism, efficiency, and decisiveness, coupled with a genuine understanding that government exists to serve people.”
Eric described Jonathan as: “A doer in the truest sense of the word; someone who focused not on obstacles, but on solutions.”
He also highlighted Jonathan’s profound influence on the investment migration industry.
“His contribution to Malta’s investment migration sector was formidable and arguably unrivalled. Through his leadership at Identity Malta and later at the Residency Malta Agency, Jonathan played a pivotal role in the development, implementation, and ongoing success of Malta’s most important residence and citizenship by investment programmes.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Jonathan will be remembered by many for his warmth, generosity, and humanity.
As Eric noted in his tribute:
“One of his greatest strengths was his ability to build and inspire teams. The people who worked with him respected him not simply because of his position, but because of the way he led. He was approachable, personable, and genuinely interested in those around him.”
Remembering Jonathan, Latitude Group COO Ryan Darmanin said:
“Jon combined exceptional professional talent with genuine humanity. He had a unique ability to connect with people, earn their trust, and leave a lasting impression. While his professional achievements were significant, it is his kindness, generosity, and friendship that those of us who knew him will remember most. He will be deeply missed.”
Those who had the privilege of working with Jonathan will remember not only his professional capabilities, but also his positivity, sense of humour, and ability to bring people together.
The investment migration industry has lost one of its most respected public servants. Malta has lost a dedicated contributor to the nation. Many have lost a valued colleague, trusted counterpart, and friend.
Our thoughts are with Jonathan’s wife, his children, his wider family, friends, and former colleagues during this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Jonathan.
