Canada is home to one of the world’s most appealing markets for entrepreneurs, investors, and internationally mobile families. It offers access to a sophisticated North American economy, a diverse consumer base, a highly educated workforce, strong public institutions, and a globally respected quality of life.

The Canada Start-Up Visa Program was created to connect foreign entrepreneurs with Canadian designated organizations, including approved venture capital funds, angel investor groups, and business incubators. The route was designed for applicants with the skills and potential to build innovative businesses in Canada.

Unlike passive residence by investment options, the Canada Start-Up Visa is an entrepreneur immigration pathway. It is linked to business creation, innovation, designated organization support, due diligence, and permanent residence.

Because availability is now limited, prospective applicants should move quickly to assess whether they may qualify for one of Latitude’s remaining Canada SUV opportunities.

Benefits of Canada Start-up Visa

The Canada Start-Up Visa offers a pathway to Canadian permanent residence for qualifying entrepreneurs and their families. Permanent residence allows successful applicants to live, work, and study in Canada, subject to meeting the program requirements and maintaining permanent residence status.

The federal Canada Start-Up Visa route is now closed to most new applicants. However, Latitude has access to a limited number of remaining opportunities connected to previously secured program capacity. For qualified entrepreneurs, this may represent one of the final opportunities to pursue Canadian permanent residence through the SUV route before the program is redesigned or replaced.

Canada is one of the world’s most stable and respected economies. Entrepreneurs benefit from access to North American markets, skilled talent, innovation infrastructure, public support for business development, and proximity to the United States.

The Canada Start-Up Visa requires applicants to secure support from a designated organization. These organizations may include approved venture capital funds, angel investor groups, and business incubators that assess and support qualifying start-up concepts.

The principal applicant can include a spouse or partner and dependent children in the permanent residence application, subject to medical, security, documentation, and eligibility requirements.

Canadian permanent residents can benefit from access to Canada’s education system and publicly funded healthcare, subject to provincial or territorial rules and any applicable waiting periods.

Permanent residents who live in Canada and meet the relevant physical presence, language, tax filing, and eligibility requirements may later become eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.

For international entrepreneurs and families, Canada offers stability, safety, education, healthcare, business opportunity, and long-term security in a globally respected jurisdiction.

Who Can Get Canada Residency

The principal applicant must generally:

  • Be over 18 years old
  • Have a qualifying business or participate in a qualifying start-up venture
  • Secure support from a Canadian designated organization
  • Meet Canadian Language Benchmark 5 in English or French
  • Bring sufficient settlement funds
  • Pass medical, criminal, and security checks
  • Demonstrate the lawful source of funds used for the investment
  • Meet all applicable IRCC and designated organization requirements

A spouse or partner over the age of 18 may be included in the application, provided they meet the relevant medical, criminal, security, and documentation requirements.

Unmarried, dependent children under the age of 22 may be included, subject to Canada’s dependency rules, medical checks, security screening, and documentation requirements.

Program Requirements

To qualify for one of Latitude’s limited remaining Canada Start-Up Visa opportunities, applicants must fulfil ONE of the following investment options AND meet other requirements:

Option 1: Qualifying Business or Start-Up Venture

Applicants must be connected to a qualifying business or start-up venture. The Canada Start-Up Visa is designed for entrepreneurs with the skills and potential to build businesses in Canada that are innovative, can create jobs, and can compete internationally.

Applicants may be paired with a founder and other qualified applicants as part of a structured start-up venture supported by a designated organization.

Option 2: Designated Organization Support

Applicants must secure support from a designated organization approved by the Canadian Government. This may include an angel investor group, venture capital fund, or business incubator.

The designated organization assesses the business concept and, where appropriate, provides the required support documentation for the Canada Start-Up Visa process.

Option 3: Minimum Investment

Latitude’s current remaining Canada SUV opportunity is expected to require a minimum investment of C$290,000.

This investment package may include participation in a Canadian start-up venture, designated organization support, due diligence, onboarding, corporate legal, professional, advisory, membership, and incubation-related fees.

Final availability, structure, and pricing should be confirmed with Latitude before proceeding.

Other Requirements and Considerations

The Canada Start-Up Visa is an entrepreneur immigration route, not a passive investment program. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a credible business basis, satisfy designated organization requirements, meet language and settlement funds requirements, and pass medical, criminal, and security screening.

Canadian permanent residents must also maintain PR status. This generally requires being physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within every five-year period, unless specific exceptions apply.

Applicants seeking Canadian citizenship must meet separate requirements. These generally include physical presence in Canada, language ability where applicable, tax filing obligations, and good character.

Because the Canada Start-Up Visa is now closed to most new applicants, any remaining opportunity should be treated as limited, time-sensitive, and subject to individual assessment.

Language Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate English or French ability at Canadian Language Benchmark 5. This applies to speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Settlement Funds

Applicants must show that they have enough money to settle in Canada. The required amount depends on family size and is separate from any investment, business, advisory, legal, professional, or government fees.

Medical, Criminal, and Security Checks

Applicants and included family members must pass medical, criminal, and security checks. Any concerns relating to admissibility, criminal history, documentation, source of funds, health, or misrepresentation may affect the application.

Application Process

  • Months 1-4

    Client Onboarding and Application Preparation

The process begins with Latitude’s initial due diligence and eligibility assessment. This allows us to review the applicant’s objectives, business background, family composition, language readiness, source of funds, and potential suitability for one of the remaining Canada Start-Up Visa opportunities.

Following successful screening, Latitude provides a Client Agreement for review and signature. Once the agreement is signed and the retainer is received, our team assists with business concept preparation, documentation, due diligence, and coordination with the relevant designated organization.

Where applicable, the designated organization will assess the start-up venture and provide the required support documentation. Latitude will also assist with preparing the permanent residence application, supporting documents, medical and security requirements, and related filings.

  • Months 1-24

Application Review and Permanent Residence Status Planning

The application will be reviewed by the Canadian authorities. During this period, applicants should remain prepared to respond to any requests for additional information, documentation, medical checks, background information, or source of funds clarification.

Applicants should also begin planning for long-term permanent residence obligations. To maintain Canadian PR status, permanent residents generally need to be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within every five-year period, unless specific exceptions apply.

  • Month 36 and Beyond

    Permanent Residence and Citizenship Planning

If approved, applicants and included family members obtain Canadian permanent residence.

Permanent residents who intend to pursue Canadian citizenship should plan their time in Canada carefully. To apply for citizenship, applicants generally need to be physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the five years immediately before applying, while also meeting other requirements relating to language, tax filing, and good character.

The Canada Start-Up Visa can therefore support a long-term pathway from permanent residence to citizenship for applicants who genuinely plan to build ties to Canada and meet the relevant requirements.

Canada remains highly attractive for entrepreneurs because of its stable economy, educated workforce, innovation ecosystem, quality of life, education, healthcare, and access to North American markets.
