Antigua Airport to Accommodate More Flights in 2024

The Caribbean paradise of Antigua and Barbuda is about to get more accessible. How? The Antigua Airport will accommodate more flights in 2024, as our news story reveals.

Antigua Airport History

The official name of the Antigua Airport is V.C. Bird International Airport. V.C. Bird was Sir Vere Cornwall Bird (1910-1999). He was the first Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, ruling from 1981 to 1994.

In 1985, the Antigua Airport, was renamed in his honour. It had began life as Coolidge Airfield in 1941. Captain Hamilton Coolidge (1895–1918), an American pilot gunned down in World War I, inspired the name of this US Air Force base.

Becoming a civil airport in 1949 after the base closed down, the Antigua Airport helped the twin-island nation to become a more attractive prospect to tourists. The largest airport on the Leeward Islands, it caters to over 850,000 passengers a year.

Located 8km (5 miles) north east of capital St. John’s, the airport’s a great gateway to the Land of 365 Beaches.

2024 Increase of Flights

American Airlines is leading the way, with its seasonal flights from Charlotte going daily from December 5. This will match the service out of John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines flights from Atlanta will go bi-weekly in winter 2024-25. Keeping with the trend, JetBlue commences a daily nonstop service from JFK this summer season. This replaces the current thrice-weekly service. Finally, United Airlines is maintaining its daily winter service from New York/Newark.
