If you’re a fan of urban living, finding out the identity of the world’s most liveable city will appeal. The possibilities of Citizenship by Descent, in this regard, are endless. You can gain entry to a country (and its capital or other major cities) to retire, study, or work in.
This new base need not be permanent. As the world turns ever more unpredictable, a bolthole becomes a necessity. It’s always prudent to have a Plan B in place in the eventuality of your Plan A being derailed.
The Global Liveability Index 2024 is the brainchild of The Economist Intelligence Unit Limited (EIU). It has been publishing these reports from 2013 onwards. Before we reveal the identity of the world’s most liveable city for 2024, let’s look at the methodology and metrics the EIU employ.
EIU calculate the liveability score through assessing five main categories. There are acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable, and intolerable scores. These combine to create a ranking from 1 (intolerable) to 100 (ideal), with a score of 80-100 indicating that “there are few, if any, challenges to living standards.”
The first category, Stability, makes up 25% of this ranking. Factors include incidence of crime and terror threats. In-the-field correspondents report their findings to EIU.
Healthcare is the second category, contributing 20% to the overall rating. EIU reporters again rank the city with regard to its public and private healthcare facilities. The World Bank Group is the authority the EIU use for general healthcare considerations.
The third category is Culture and Environment, representing 25% of the total ranking. EIU contributors are responsible for factors such as gastronomy and sport. The report also adapts data from Transparency International.
Education is the fourth category. It makes up 10% of the city’s liveability score. Again, EIU ratings comprise the majority of this ranking but there’s also adapted data from World Bank.
The final, fifth, category is infrastructure. It contributes 20% of the city’s overall rank. Here, EIU reporters cover everything, from good quality housing availability to telecommunications quality.
Vienna is again the most liveable city in the world. This is a crown it has worn since 2022. It was also the EIU top-ranking metropolis between 2018 and 2019 too.
Why Vienna? For EIU this is due to “its exceptional combination of stability, excellent culture and environment, reliable infrastructure, and top-performing education and health services.”
Vienna received top marks for 4 out of the 5 categories. The only category that saw it being marked down was Culture and Environment. This was “owing to a lack of major sporting events.”
Generally speaking, Western Europe was the strongest-performing region. If you study the report, you will see Denmark’s Copenhagen in second place and Zurich, Switzerland in third. Across the categories, Western Europe is top in 4 out of 5 categories with North America besting it in Education alone.
